The European Spallation Source is one of the most exciting, innovative and ground-breaking,” Big Science” projects under construction today. Research with neutrons lies behind some of the most important materials and innovations which improve our everyday lives, our health and our environment – and ESS will be the most powerful neutron source when fully operational in 2027.

Whilst others have built telescopes that allow us to look into the furthest regions of space, now we will build a device so powerful it will allow us to the study the smallest objects in the finest detail.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role:

The ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are now looking to hire Electrical Design Engineers to join the technical projects group within our Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) project division.

The Technical Projects Group - among other things - is responsible for the delivery and integration of electrical infrastructure and all instrument electrical systems. In this role, you will be working with a multi-disciplinary team of Engineers, Scientists and Technicians to design and deliver neutron instrument electrical solutions.

This is a truly unique and diverse role. As our next Electrical Design Engineer, you will be actively involved in electrical design work for instrument projects, including single line and circuit diagrams, rack and cabinet designs, system cable designs for complex instrument systems and other related tasks. You will also support with the establishment of instrument electrical requirements and scope of work, as well as providing support with documentation, procurement, installation and commissioning of relevant parts of the NSS electrical systems.

About you:

To thrive with us in the Neutron Scattering Systems technical projects group you need to be driven, responsive and good at spotting both problems and opportunities. First and foremost, we need an Electrical Engineer who is suitably qualified and experienced. For this role, a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering would be an advantage, however, we will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience. We need you to show us that you are an expert in EPLAN for the development of single line and circuit diagrams. Experience in Aveva 3D for cable raceway system designs would also be a huge advantage.

In addition to this, we are looking for someone with demonstrable experience of writing technical documentation, and who can present detailed designs at preliminary and critical design review stages. Your assignments might also include supervision of installation and commissioning work. We know this is huge request, but if you have any prior experience of neutron instrumentation or working in radiation facilities, this would be a great benefit!

We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible way.

The working language of ESS is English and we need someone who can start as soon as possible! We have two positions available; One is a full-time, permanent position and the other is a fixed-term position for a period of 3 years. You will be based at the ESS facility in Lund, Sweden.

Imagine what we could learn if we could build a machine so powerful that it could look deep inside the very materials that the universe is made from. A device that could actually let us see the atoms and molecules that make up the structure of substances. Imagine the new discoveries we could make, the new materials we could develop and how much we could learn about ourselves and our universe.

The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we now need JOB TITLE...

As our next Detector Electronics Engineer, you will provide expertise to the Detector Design and Production Team and will work closely with other members of the Detector Services Section, instrument scientists, and data scientists. While the main workspace is the Detector Facility (Utgård), tasks will need to be performed at the Source Facility (at close by Lund University) and eventually onsite (at the ESS campus). Utgård is a workshop equipped to the highest standards to be utilized for realizing ultimate neutron detector technologies. The Source Facility allows for prototypes to be subjected to well-controlled fields of radiation. You may be required to visit collaborating partners and neutron centers worldwide, as necessary.

This is a permanent, full-time position and we need someone who can start as soon as possible!

About you:

To thrive with us in the Detector Group, you need to be driven, responsive and good at spotting both problems and opportunities. You need to be a highly motivated, hands-on person who isn’t afraid to get your hands dirty.

First and foremost, we need someone who is suitably qualified and experienced. Ideally, you will have appropriate technical qualifications, however relevant experience in a similar role is more critical than the type of qualification you hold. Ideally, you are an accomplished detector electronics engineer, with experience in the design, construction, commissioning, testing, installation, integration and operation of electronics. Experience with the types of neutron detectors to be deployed at the ESS instruments (or the underlying technologies) is a plus. A strong understanding of grounding issues at accelerator facilities and experience with suppressing sources of electronic noise would be a huge asset.

Our ideal candidate will have prior experience with designing of PCBs - from highly sensitive, low-noise to HV, and from analog to digital - as well as detailed knowledge of detector front-end electronics and some knowledge of data acquisition as well as a demonstrated record of the construction, commissioning, and testing of such equipment. We need someone with significant prior experience of programming complex FPGA systems with multi-Gbit links using VHDL and ideally Xilinx. Programming and computing skills will be considered a plus (C++, TCL, Python).

We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible and – most importantly – safe way.

The working language of ESS is English but it would be great if you could also work in Swedish as well. For this role, we need someone who can start as soon as possible!

Group Leader for Technical Projects - Neutron scattering systems division

Civilingenjör, teknisk fysik
Läs mer Maj 15
The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

About the role:

ESS is at an exciting turning point. We have started the transition from being a construction site, to being a world-class, operating neutron research facility. As we continue to restructure our organisation in the lead up to first neutrons in 2025, we now looking to appoint our next Group Leader for Technical Projects within our Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) Division. The Technical Projects Group is responsible for management of engineering of the neutron scattering instruments, design and manufacturing of the neutron bunker and radiation shielding, design support for instrument technologies, delivery of electrical and utilities infrastructure and the integration of instrument electrical systems.

As Group Leader for NSS Technical Projects, you will have the responsibility to continue driving a strong project management culture in the group, ensuring that the NSS subproject can be delivered on schedule and within budget. The role-specific tasks are therefore centred around managing and leading the NSS technical projects team, and will include: recruiting engineering and technical staff; identifying needs for mechanical and electrical engineering support to dependent project teams (including external partners); and maintaining oversight of budgets, schedules, and resources for the group.

The Technical Projects Group Leader serves the point of contact for mid-level technical and engineering coordination between NSS and other engineering functions at ESS- which includes conventional facilities, Target, Accelerator, the installation part of Project Office, EIS and the Engineering Office.

This is a permanent, full-time, on-site role based at the ESS campus in Lund, Sweden.

About you:

This Group Leader role at ESS is a management level position. As such, we are seeking a well-qualified, highly motivated person who is truly excited by the chance to serve as an engineering leader for the NSS division and who can bring significant, demonstrable experience in supervising a diverse mix of staff and contractors in the delivery of the portfolio of technical projects of the group.

We imagine that the successful candidate would have a minimum of a master's degree in an engineering field, and several years of experience from working in engineering projects. We also need someone who can bring significant, demonstrable experience of leading - and building - cohesive, highly functioning teams of more than 10 direct reports.

This is a high-profile, specialised and technical role within a pan-European scientific collaboration. As such, the successful candidate must have the experience needed to manage the engineering workload related to the NSS technical projects to ensure that engineering solutions are provided for both the neutron instrument projects and related technical infrastructure. Ideally, you will have prior experience of working with neutron scattering instruments at a similar scientific infrastructure, and have prior experience of working with in-kind partners located in multiple countries.

As we are soon making the transition from construction to operations, we need someone who can follow procedures, but also create and improve them. We need a real team player: Someone who has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people, and who is committed to helping this exciting project to realise its full potential. We want a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, and safe way.

The working language of ESS is English, but for this role it would be a distinct advantage if you were fluent in both English and Swedish. The start date is negotiable, but we are looking for someone who can start no later than 1st of October 2023 if possible.

What can we offer?

Aside from the chance to work at truly unique big science project, you can also expect:

• An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
• A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
• A challenging, innovative and stimulating work environment.

• 30 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
• Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
• Flexible working arrangements and a real work-life balance.

It is a brand-new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role:

The ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are now looking to hire a Work Coordination and Planning Functional Leader to join our Operations Division. The Operations Division is one of the four divisions of the Operations and Infrastructure Directorate (OID), and consists of Control Room Operations Group, Infrastructure Operations and Maintenance Group and Work Coordination and Planning functional unit. Broadly, the purpose of the Operations Division is to Provide operation of the ESS neutron source and related technical infrastructure and to oversee all the maintenance of common industrial infrastructure systems.

As our next Work Coordination and Planning Functional Leader, you will be responsible for ensuring that all daily/weekly works are planned and coordinated in common operational areas and for works affecting operations. This means ensuring that work orders and work permits are obtained before scheduling work and ensuring that the local safety, radiation protection and security rules are followed. As the contact person for all work leads, you will be continuously collecting and providing feedback on process and system improvements enabling work coordination and planning and also following up on incident reports (in conjunction with other relevant departments) - ensuring efficient and safe work coordination. This role will work closely with summer/winter maintenance planning and coordination function at ESS.

This is a full-time, permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.

About you:

To thrive with us in the Operations Division, you need to be driven, responsive and good at spotting both problems and opportunities. You need to be a highly motivated person who isn’t afraid to get stuck in from day one.

First and foremost, we need someone who is suitably qualified and experienced. Ideally, you will have appropriate technical qualifications, such as a Master's degree in civil engineering, particle physics or a related field. However relevant experience in a similar role is as critical as the type of qualification you hold. Prior experience of coordinating multiple, complex projects with competing deadlines - as well as leading people in a particle accelerator or similar "big science" type of organisation - is a prerequisite for this role.

We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible and – most importantly – safe way.

The working language of ESS is English and we need someone who can start as soon as possible!

• 30 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
• Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
• Flexible working arrangements and a real work-life balance.
