About this opportunity:
Hardware Engineering is one of three Engineering Units in Business Area Networks, responsible for the end-to-end development for our Radios and Transport products, including ASIC and FPGA development, as well as optimization of coordinated software development flows.
Product Engineering Unit Radio is a unit within HW Engineering, largely based on today’s PDU Radio, responsible for development, release, maintenance and quality assurance of Ericsson Radio Portfolio. Further, PEU Radio is responsible to secure technology for future platforms and products, including technology strategy and specification of components, modules and ASICs that future products will be based upon. Performing the responsibilities of PEU Radio will be done with tight collaboration within HW Engineering Unit in general and with PEU Silicon and PEU Radio Unit Software in particular.

Radio Product Sweden is the organization within Product Engineering Unit Radio that are responsible for all Radio product development in Sweden including the responsibility for the most advanced and largest projects in which we introduce our new digital ASIC’s and set the product architecture for our next Radio product generation.

This exciting opportunity involves leading multiple areas simultaneously, with a focus on driving the project development of highly technical teams across all stages, from inception to completion. You will be at the helm of a large-scale project, leading teams of 200 to 1,000 cross-functional members. MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) has been one of the key advantages for 4G, and more so for 5G and future wireless technologies, as the primary method for improving spectrum efficiency and as a result, the cell throughput, cell capacity, UE scheduling latency, UE throughput and other important KPIs that are critical for any operators.
MIMO is inherently complex, right from how 3GPP has defined the framework to support MIMO operation in the specification, to the degree of freedom vendors have, to design their own algorithms to allow their baseband and radios to collaborate in the best way possible to uncover the potential in performance. The SoC Validation team, which is part of Digital ASIC and FPGA in Lund, has the assignment, in collaboration with Kista and Austin, to perform HW Lab Verification and Validation activities for FPGA and ASIC Radio products.

The work consists in developing a validation framework, performing electrical and validation measurements, supporting product integration.

To prepare for a new device, test script and programs needs to be extended and customized, test boards specified and a validation plan produced. Dry runs might be performed using virtual or emulation platforms.

When the new ASIC arrives to our HW validation lab a bring up activity starts, followed by some initial manual debug and investigation.

After this initial phase a core set of electrical validation measurements is performed to cover PVT, power correlation and performance aspects.

Research Area Radio is responsible for providing advanced system and signal processing solutions, including multi-antenna concepts, targeting standardization of radio access systems as well as implementation in network nodes and devices.

You will
Master physical layer techniques (signal processing, multi-antenna and advanced receiver algorithms, etc.) and radio algorithms (linearization, crest factor reduction, passive intermodulation handling, etc.).
Use your understanding of the capabilities and constraints of communication hardware, considering both current and future technologies.
Use and develop simulation tools for evaluating new solutions.
Investigate concepts and solutions for the continuous development and improvement of existing standards, e.g., New Radio (5G NR), and future radio access technologies, e.g., 6G.
Ensure that the proposed solutions enable efficient overall system performance.
Collaborate with both internal and external partners.

You will bring
For the open positions, we are seeking exceptionally skilled and motivated researchers with competence and experience in signal processing, control theory, wireless communications, and communications hardware, such as antennas, power amplifiers, circuitry, and RF ASIC design. The positions require an M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree, or similar, preferably with demonstrated experience and knowledge in the above-mentioned required skills.

Skills in structured object-oriented programming, e.g., C++, and Python, are required, as simulations will be natural parts of the work in addition to analytical evaluations. Good knowledge in simulation and evaluation tool methodology is desirable. Interest in leadership and leadership experience are further qualifying.

At a personal level, you are good at communicating and enjoy collaboration. You are fluent in written and spoken English. You enjoy working with people who have a diverse set of backgrounds and competencies. You also have the ability to handle theoretical and practical research as well as the development aspects of the role. It is important that you have a strong personal drive and a strong focus on the tasks at hand.
